THE BEGINING OF YWAV
Following the expulsion of farmers from the country at the beginning of this century, supply of food to the children has become one of the biggest challenges of the ministry. Initially, the gap was filled by the gift of container loads of food donated by an organisation called Feed My Starving Children, based in Minnesota in the USA.
Subsequently, the government banned the importation of this food, and the ministry was forced to purchase imported grain from government agents, at inflated prices. What has alleviated the problem to some extent was the gift of a small portion of farmland in the country’s most fertile farming area.
THE START OF FARMING OPERATIONS
Pastor Bonface has produced record yields from this small farm, and yet it is not enough to provide for more than about one third of the need. We live in the hope of acquiring more farmland, as most of the farms in the area are not cultivated.
Over the past four years, through the generosity of ministry partners, we have provided boreholes in two of the locations cared for by YWAV. The water from these boreholes has been used to irrigate vegetable gardens, which have proved to be most fruitful.
BLESSED WITH A NEW TRUCK
Five different communities are served by YWAV, separated by hundreds of kilometres. This has presented some difficulties regarding pastoral care and food distribution. This pressure was significantly relieved by the gift of a Toyota Hilux truck, by one of our American supporters.
PROJECT PROFILE
We seek to ensure that every orphaned child is placed in a safe, loving and caring family environment where they will be fed, clothed, schooled and housed. Most importantly, they must be valued as human beings.
The aim is to make this work self sufficient as far as possible, and in this respect, great progress has been made over the last decade.
A total of more than fourteen hundred orphans, children and youth, together with their care-givers are provided for, through this ministry. They each receive one bowl of corn porridge per day, supplemented by a small portion of vegetables.
When YWAV began, there were hundreds of children facing death from starvation. Some of these early rescues are now studying at university. We praise God for His faithful provision, and look forward to seeing what He has planned for us in 2024.
